Jasper's Lady Dawgs Softball team enjoyed an amazing sendoff Friday at 11:00 am as they traveled to Navasota to take on the Taylor Lady Ducks in the 4A Regional Quarterfinals. With all the love and support shown by the Jasper community, the Lady Dawgs were unable to advance suffering a defeat to Taylor by a final score of 4 - 2.

It appeared early that a defensive battle would develop into a low scoring contest.

The Lady Dawgs dodged a bullet in the top of the first inning as Taylor got two singles placing runners on second and third base with only one out. Jasper's Aimee Coleson was able to get the next two batters to fly out and ground out to end Taylor's at bat. In the bottom of the first inning, Taylor's Lindsay O'Dell, struck out Jasper's first three batters. The second inning went scoreless as both Coleson and O'Dell picked up two more strikeouts each.

In the third inning, the Lady Dawgs scored first on a walk issued to Kalani Sells. Sells stole second base, then advanced to third base on a passed ball by the catcher. O'Dell then issued her second consecutive walk, this time to Chasity Furlow. After reaching first base, Furlow broke attempting to steal second base and was thrown out by pitcher O'Dell. Sells scored from third on the throw out of Furlow giving the Lady Dawgs the lead 1 - 0.

The Lady Dawgs dodged another bullet in the fourth inning. With one out, the Lady Ducks ripped three consecutive singles off Coleson. On the third base hit by Taylor's Allison Ortega, centerfielder Kalani Sells was able to field the ball and throw to second base forcing out Allison Ortiz for the second out of the inning.

Coleson ended Taylor's at bat by striking out Mackenzie Watson.

In the top of the sixth inning, Coleson issues a leadoff walk to O'Dell. Kayleigh Page then executes a perfect sacrifice bunt advancing O'Dell to second base. A'Ja Lucas then doubles scoring O'Dell tying the score at 1 - 1. In the bottom of the inning, O'Dell issues Madison Smith a one out walk. Kiarra Sells then singles for the Lady Dawgs first hit of the night off O'Dell. With runners at first and second, Marissa Williams hits a ground ball to shortstop. The shortstop throws to third base attempting to get the force out of Smith. The third baseman is unable to handle the throw and Smith scores giving the Lady Dawgs the lead by a score of 2 - 1.

Entering the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Dawgs needed only three outs to claim a victory and advance to the semifinal game next week. The Lady Ducks of Taylor, with their backs against a wall, had different aspirations. Taylor came out swinging the bats and with the collapse of the Lady Dawgs committing three defensive errors, Taylor scored three runs giving them the lead by a score of 4 - 2. The Lady Dawgs found themselves in a reverse situation now trailing by two runs. Zoey Koehn leads off with a single (only the second Jasper hit of the night off O'Dell).

Kalani Sells then grounds into a fielders choice forcing Koehn out at second base.

O'Dell then strikes out Chasity Furlow for the second out. JaKayla Shankle hits a ground ball to the first baseman for an unassisted put out ending the Lady Dawgs season.

Taylor's pitcher, Lindsay O'Dell had a stellar performance allowing Jasper only two runs on two hits and recording fourteen strikeouts. Taylor will advance to the Regional Semifinals next week against the winner of the Bridge City vs Liberty series.

Although the Lady Dawgs season has come to an end, program history was made by advancing to the Regional Quarterfinals for the first time. Congratulations to the five graduating seniors on a great career with the Lady Dawgs. The future of the Lady Dawgs looks very promising as some talented young ladies await next year's season. It has been a pleasure for KJAS and myself to have brought the Jasper community coverage of Lady Dawgs Softball this season.
