Marguerite Alease Pennington, 96, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019 in Bryan, Texas. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, March 15, 2019 from 4pm-6pm at Smith Funeral Home in Newton. Graveside Memorial Service will be on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 10am at the Newton Cemetery.

Marguerite Alease Pennington was born in Ashdown, Arkansas, on February 24, 1923 to John Leo and Emma Grace Gentry, and graduated from Ashdown High School in 1940.

On April 12, 1941, she wed John Benton Pennington in Ashdown, Arkansas; whom she was married to for 43 years. While John was in the service during World War II (1942-1945), Marguerite worked at Wrighton’s Department Store in Ashdown until his return. After the war they moved to Newton, where they operated and later owned Newton Grocery Store. In 1995, she moved to Bryan, Texas to be close to her children and grandchildren.

Marguerite was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed baking, quilting and visiting with friends, and she cherished her time with her grandchildren. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Newton.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, her son, John Benton “Benny” Pennington, Jr., two sisters, Mary Welch and Maudie Sue Shaddock, two brothers, James C. Gentry and Jay Gentry.

She is survived by her daughter, Grace Lynn Savage and son-in-law, Gene Savage of College Station, and daughter-in-law, Wanda Pennington of Franklin; three granddaughters, Arlisa Hrncir and husband, Jeff of Franklin, Jill O’Pella and husband, Shawn of Leander, Kimberly Hammett and husband, Garth of College Station; grandsons, Tom McKinney of College Station, Brock Savage of San Antonio and Brett Savage of College Station; eight grandchildren, Zack and Nick Hrncir, Claire and Kent O’Pella, Katelyn and Alaina Hammett and baby boy Hammett on the way, Liam Savage; as well as many more family and friends.

The family wishes to thank all who have sent their kind words, support, and prayers.
