Josie Matilda Gill McCoy was born November 27, 1936, in Magnolia Springs, Texas, and passed away on September 8, 2021, at Methodist Hospital Dallas. Her family moved to Merryville, Louisiana, in 1942. She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in DeRidder, La, in 1955.

She married Edward (E.D.) McCoy on August 20, 1955. To this union one daughter was born, Cherlyn Denise, known to everyone as “Penny.” Upon his death, they were married 47 years. Josie expanded her love to a foster daughter and son.

She began her nursing career at Richardson-Jones Hospital in 1963. She moved to Richardson-Jones clinic in 1965. She was the first African American nurse to work in a doctor’s office in Jasper County. She retired after working with Dr. Peter Bidwell for 22 years completing a 40-year professional nursing career.

Mrs. McCoy received the 2013 Jasper Pillar of the community award. She volunteered with the Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital auxiliary and served as president 2012—2014.

She is survived by two daughters, Penny McCoy Jacko and TuWanda Wilson Akinola; one son, Charles Beatty; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; four brothers, one aunt, one uncle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a wealth of friends.
