Mildred Day (441x441).jpg

Mildred Mae Tompkins Day, 89, of Burkeville, Texas passed away on June 5, 2019. Born in East Mayfield, (Hemphill) Texas on September 19, 1929, she was the daughter of Jesse Washington Tompkins and Clemmie Mae Erwin Tompkins. Mildred was a 1947 graduate of Buna High School. She married James Edward Day on July 2, 1947. Mildred’s first job was at Simmons and Day Grocery. After that she had several positions until finding a home as a Secretary for Burkeville ISD. She retired from her position after 28+ years of loyal service to Burkeville schools. During her time at BISD Mildred touched the lives of students and teachers. Many have kept in touch with her through the years and remember her welcoming smile, kindness and elegance. Mildred loved writing letters and clipping articles and poems from newspapers and magazines. If you knew her well, then you have received at least three or more in the mail. She also loved to read. The Bible was her favorite book but her home was cluttered with newspapers, Reader’s Digests and countless Christian books. Mildred did not always attend church but was known for her strong faith, religious convictions and love for Jesus. If you disagreed with her on religion, it was wise for you to know your Bible because she certainly did. Mildred was a wonderful cook. Her chicken and dumplings, spaghetti sauce and fried shrimp were among the family favorites. Many birthdays and holidays were celebrated by family at her dining room table and the long-standing family joke was to be there on time cause Mawmaw liked her Coke cold and her food hot. She loved her family dearly, especially her sisters, Ima, Bernice and Billie. They shared a very special bond. Mildred will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Day; daughter, Gloria Hart; her parents; her brother, Jesse (Son) Tompkins; and sister, Imogene Bass. She is survived by her loving sons, James Norman Day of Burkeville and Ronald S. Day of Austin; grandchildren, Kim Powers and husband Jay; Kevin Day and wife Crystal; Kelli Day and husband Dustin; Wesley Day and wife Debbie; Danielle Sullivan and Loran; Alex Entwistle, Colton Day, Ian Day, and Corina Day; and ten great grandchildren.
