The Texas Department of Public Safety has released an updated statement regarding a fatal accident involving a motorcycle on Sunday evening in north Hardin County. It happened at about 8:00 on Farm to Market Road 92 about 7 miles north of Silsbee, and just south of the Tyler County line. Troopers say not only did the motorcyclist die, but they found the person accused of causing the crash deceased at his home.

According to a statement from DPS Sergeant Stephanie Davis late Monday morning, troopers initially determined that a 1998 Chevrolet passenger vehicle was traveling northbound and crossed the center line, colliding head-on into a southbound 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle.

However, Davis released a revised statement on Monday afternoon which said troopers believe that the Chevrolet first ran into a ditch, and then backed up onto the highway into the path of the motorcycle.

After the initial crash, Davis said the motorcyclist was laying on the highway and was struck by a 2008 Dodge pickup truck.

The operator of the motorcycle, 61-year-old Mark Randall Wallace, of Beaumont, was pronounced dead at the scene by Hardin County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Mark Ames. KFDM 6 News is reporting that they have learned that Wallace was an instructor at Silsbee High School.

Meanwhile, Davis said the driver of the Chevrolet, 53-year-old Jerry Sangwin, of Spurger, fled the scene. Davis said a short time later troopers found his wrecked vehicle, and when they went to his residence they found him deceased. Davis didn't say what was the possible cause of Sangwin's death, but she noted that Justice of the Peace Milton Powers has ordered a toxicology test on his body.

Davis said the driver of the Dodge pickup truck, a 48-year-old male from Buna, was not injured.

UPDATED statement from DPS - Mon, Sep 14th, 2020 3:30 p.m.

On September 13, 2020, at approximately 8:00p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a multiple vehicle crash on FM 92 in Hardin County.  The crash occurred approximately seven (7) miles north of Silsbee and involved a motorcycle.

The preliminary DPS crash investigation indicated that a 1998 Chevrolet passenger vehicle was traveling north on FM 92, crossed the center line and struck a 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle that was traveling south on FM 92.  Through further investigation and analysis of crash scene data, it was discovered that the 1998 Chevrolet initially traveled off the road and crashed into a ditch.  As the driver of the Chevrolet attempted to back the wrecked vehicle out of the ditch, he backed onto FM 92 striking the motorcycle.  The impact caused the motorcyclist to fall off the motorcycle where he was struck a short time later by a 2008 Dodge pickup truck.

The motorcyclist, 61-year-old Mark Randall Wallace of Beaumont, was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Mark Ames at the scene.  Wallace was not wearing a helmet when EMS arrived on the scene.

The driver of the Chevrolet fled the crash scene; however, a short time later, DPS Troopers located the wrecked vehicle and identified the driver as Jerry Sangwin, 53, of Spurger.  Troopers located Jerry Sangwin at his residence; however, he was found deceased.  Justice of the Peace Milton Powers has order toxicology screens for Sangwin.

The driver of the Dodge pickup truck, a 48-year-old male from Buna, was not injured in the crash.

All information is preliminary as Troopers continue to investigate this horrific crash.  There are no additional details available at this time.
