The 4A-Division II #2 ranked Jasper Bulldogs rolled over the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears in non-district football action Friday night in Mauriceville. With a 42-14 win, the Dawgs improve to 2-0 on the season.

Last week, LC-M went to West Orange-Stark where they gave the 4A Division II #3 ranked Mustangs quite a scare, going toe-to-toe with them until WO-S was finally able to pull away from them in the second half.

Jasper wasn’t having any of that. Jasper’s Reggie Shaw took the opening kickoff at the 10 yard line and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown. The point-after by Alex Mijares was good, and just 13 seconds into the game Jasper was up 7-0.

The scoring continued on Jasper’s next possession. Quarterback Trashawn Adams marched his troops down to the LC-M 6 where it looked like a handoff to running back Carl Limbrick would be stopped at the goal line by the Bear defense. However, Limbrick was able to reach the ball across and Jasper had another TD. Mijares tacked on the PAT and Jasper was quickly up 14-0.

The game began to stabilize midway through the first quarter as the LC-M defense began finding their marks, and the teams traded a few possessions.

However, Head Coach Darrell Barbay made a few adjustments on offense and the Dawgs found the end-zone again with 33 seconds left in the 1st quarter. Montavien Hunt took a handoff from quarterback and he ran it in from 18 yards out. Mijares tapped in the PAT and Jasper lead LC-M 21-0.

The Dawgs would score again before the end of the 1st quarter. LC-M went to work on offense on their next possession, but a Jasper defender intercepted a pass and a long return put the Dawgs in business at the LC-M 33. Coach Barbay called in an airstrike and quarterback Trashawn Adams delivered with a touchdown pass to Carl Limbrick as time expired. Jasper was then up 28-0 with Alex Mijares adding the extra point.

The LC-M offense finally found their groove midway through the 2nd quarter when they put together an 85 yard drive for a touchdown. That, along with the extra point, cut into Jasper’s lead by a margin of 28-7.

The Battlin’ Bear defense also had a shining moment as time was expiring in the first half. The Jasper offense had driven down to the LC-M 2, but LC-M put up a ferocious goal-line stand and held the Dawgs out, resulting in Jasper turning the ball over on downs as time ran out.

Both squads went to the dressing room with Jasper leading 28-7.

Early in the second half the Jasper offense went back to work and Montavien Hunt busted loose for an 87 yard TD run. A delay of game penalty on the point after pushed the Dawgs back 5 yard turning the chip-shot PAT into a 25 yard field goal. Alex Mijares nailed it and Jasper was up 35-7.

Late in the 2nd quarter with 3:52 on the clock, Montavien Hunt broke loose on another long run, this time through the middle of the line and then straight up Main Street before he was caught from behind by an LC-M defender at the half-yard line. On the next play Brashawn Hubbard took a handoff from quarterback Trashawn Adams and punched it in. Mijares’ extra point made it Jasper 42, LC-M 7, and that was it for the scoring.

The two teams traded possessions through the 4th quarter with LC-M finding the end zone with just a few seconds left in the game to make it Jasper 42, LC-M 14.

Jasper will be on the road again with a Friday, September 20th meeting with Livingston. Kickoff is at 7:30, KJAS will go on the air with our pre-game show at 7:00.
