The nearby town of Merryville has been listed as one of Louisiana’s top speed trap towns. Merryville made that list in a report published in the Baton Rouge newspaper The Advocate, which explained that the speed trap designation is based upon a ratio of 51% to 100% of a municipality’s income being derived from speeding tickets.
Merryville was near the bottom of the list of twenty-one towns, with the report saying that 60%-70% of their income is from traffic related offences.
Meanwhile, the two worst speed trap towns in Louisiana were listed as Georgetown, population 327 and just north of Alexandria, and Fenton, population 369 and just northeast of Lake Charles. Both towns are on Highway 165 and, according to the report, both towns receive 90%-100% of their income through traffic citations.
