Few details are known, but we do know that two girls had a harrowing experience in the Sabine River early Monday evening.

The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 at the Highway 190 Bridge at Bon Wier. Emergency crews were told that the girls were apparently caught in the river’s current and were being carried downstream as they struggled to stay above water.

However, there was a good ending. Newton County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Odis Lane said 911 dispatchers told him that a nearby boater was able to rescue the girls.

The names of the girls or the boater are not known.
