Arson is thought to be the cause of a fire that broke out on Saturday evening on the north side of town destroying two abandoned homes.

The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department were dispatched to the 500 block of Traylor Street, just off of Fletcher Street, shortly before 9:00, when it was reported that a wood frame structure was on fire.

Firemen arrived at the scene to find that the fire had already engulfed a home and was spreading to another.

The firefighters went to work and at the same time called for assistance from both the East End and Lake Rayburn Firefighters and within a short time the fire was under control.

Firemen said there was strong evidence that the first home was set on fire, which had reportedly been abandoned for some time, . However, no injuries resulted from the incident.
