The Kirbyville Banner is reporting that the Jasper County Commissioners Court has voted in favor of pursuing a departure from membership in the Deep East Texas Council of Government (DETCOG) in favor of instead joining the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC).
The decision comes after DETCOG Executive Director Lonnie Hunt in March of last year announced that they would be closing their headquarters here in Jasper, and instead would set up shop in Lufkin.
The Banner reported that Jasper County Judge Mark Allen told them that the decision to leave DETCOG was in no way an act of retaliation for DETCOG leaving Jasper, but instead it was simply a way for Jasper County to explore other options.
Precinct 3 County Commissioner Willie Stark also spoke to the Kirbyville Banner and he noted that residents of this area seem to have much more in common with the Golden Triangle than with our neighbor, Lufkin.
As for joining the SETRPC, county leaders warn that it could be a lengthy process. However, the ball is already rolling.
The Banner is reporting that Judge Allen has already gained approval for Jasper County to join from the Commissioners Courts in Hardin and Orange Counties, while Jefferson County Commissioners opted to table the issue and revisit it after they learn more information.
