Investigators with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a shooting that took place outside the Belgrade Baptist Church on Farm to Market Road 1416, in the Belgrade Community on Sunday morning, leaving one man dead.

Newton County Sheriff Eddie Shannon confirmed on Sunday afternoon that one person had been killed and that another man was being questioned in connection with the incident that occurred at around 10:30, but said that he could not release any additional information. However, Shannon did say that an autopsy was being performed on the deceased at a morgue in Jefferson County.

A family member on Sunday evening identified the deceased as 34 year old Curtis P. Jones of Bon Wier and the alleged shooter as his uncle. She said the incident stemmed from a longstanding family feud.

Juanita Jones, who is a sister of the deceased said her brother was headed to another church, when the incident occurred. The sister said witnesses told her that someone flagged her brother down as his passed by the Belgrade Baptist Church and that when he pulled into the driveway of the church, the alleged shooter opened fire through the passenger side window of the vehicle.

Neighbors living in the area said that after Curtis Jones was shot, he apparently stepped on the gas pedal of his early model Chevrolet Suburban, causing the vehicle to shoot across the Highway and into a field, where it hit a tree.
