We now know who they are, but officials say they still don’t know how it happened. The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Department on Monday released the identities of three men who drowned in Toledo Bend Reservoir over the weekend.

They have been identified as:

James F. Young, 40, of Lafayette, LA

Joseph L. Sam Jr., 44, of Opelousas, LA

Paul L. Murphy Jr., 46, of Opelousas, LA

Sabine Parish officials say Murphy’s body was recovered on Saturday near Stonewall Jackson Drive, while Sam and Young’s bodies were recovered there the following day. That location is only about 1,500 feet from the boat ramp.

Authorities noted that Murphy was wearing a life jacket, while Sam and Young were not.

Meanwhile, their vessel, a 14-foot aluminum boat, remains missing and is presumed to be under water.

The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Department said over the weekend that the trio launched at about 10:30 Friday night, but never returned to shore. Their truck and trailer were found Saturday morning parked at a boat ramp just off of LA Highway 1215, known as the “1215 Boat Launch”, about 13 miles west of Many.
