KJAS Radio News has learned that a group of local people are planning to hold a rally and march on Saturday to call attention to the recent death of George Floyd who died at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
Reliable sources say the march will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday near the Faith Temple Church of God in Christ on Pollard Street and proceed along Pollard, turning south on Highway 96. Word is that the march will continue south on Highway 96, crossing Highway 190 and then proceed to Nelson Street. The march will continue west on Nelson Street to South Bowie Street and then turn north on Bowie. The march will then travel east on Highway 190, and cross Highway 96, before turning north on Graham Street and come to an end at the Faith Temple Church on Pollard.
Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman said Friday that he believes the march will be a peaceful protest against the tragedy that occurred in Minnesota and that has been in contact with civic leaders.
A Facebook posting said the event is being organized by Rashad Lewis, a former member of the Jasper City Council, who is a Democrat Candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives who will challenge the incumbent Brian Babin in the upcoming November General Election.
Similar marches and protests have already been held in Beaumont, Port Arthur and Lufkin to call attention to the death of the 42 year old man, who died after being arrested and choked by police in Minneapolis on May 25th.
Floyd, who was living in Minneapolis, was a native of Houston.
