Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan said Thursday that he wants all area churches to be aware of a suspicious incident that occurred during Wednesday night services at a church in the Evadale area.

According to Duncan, church members reported that about midway through the service, a young male, who no one in the church knew and was not dressed in typical clothing for a church service, walked in and sat down on the very back row. Duncan said the church’s sound technician reported that he could see a handgun sticking out of the top of his pocket.

Duncan said deputies responded, but the unknown male had already left before their arrival.

Duncan said “In this day and time, with everything that’s been happening, it’s definitely a wakeup call”, and he urged other churches to be vigilant and aware of any suspicious persons or activity.
