The Beauregard Daily News is reporting that the Humane Society of Louisiana has written a scathing public letter after State District Judge Tony A. Bennett recently approved probation for a couple after they pleaded guilty to animal abuse charges.

The report said that defendants, Steven Jones and Holly Darden, agreed to a plea deal offered by the Vernon Parish District Attorney’s Office following their arrest in October.

The report said that law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at their property on Wise-Burns Road in Leesville and discovered 6 mules, 2 dogs, and 1 horse deceased, and numerous other animals near death from starvation, dehydration, and neglect.

Numerous animals were seized and taken to emergency care, but the report said the next day a goat and a dog died, and a horse had to be euthanized.

In all, 12 animals died, while about 30 were able to be nursed back to health by rescue groups.
