After a weather cancellation in week 1, the Jasper Bulldogs finally got the 2019 football season underway on Friday night in a non-district game at Bridge City and came home with a 65-14 win.

The Dawgs wasted no time in scoring. After Bridge City took the opening kickoff, the Jasper defense held them to a 3 and out, and Bridge City’s punt set Jasper up on their own 45 yard line. On the first play of their first possession of their first game of the year, Montavien Hunt took a handoff from quarterback and jetted 55 yards for a Jasper touchdown. The point-after from placekicker Alex Mijares was good, and Jasper lead 7-0.

After another Bridge City 3 and out and punt, the Jasper offense went back to work moving the ball down to the BC 39 yard line, where Carl Limbrick broke free and hauled one in. Mijares’ PAT was good and Jasper had jumped out to a 14-0 lead still early in the 1st quarter.

Bridge City had a little offensive spark of their own on a massive running play that went to the Jasper 10. However, the Dawg-D stiffened up, resulting in Bridge City settling for a field goal and cutting a little slice off of Jasper’s lead.

The Dawgs went right back to work and on their next possession and moved the ball down to the BC 1, a drive which included a pass play to Bryce Barbay. The big back Carl Limbrick punched it in and the PAT made it Jasper 21, Bridge City 3.

Jasper continued scoring and on the first play from scrimmage in the 2nd quarter, Carl Limbrick again busted loose, this time for a 19 yard TD run. Mijares’ PAT was good and Jasper was up 28-3.

Both teams traded a few possessions through the 2nd quarter until Bridge City intercepted a Jasper pass that set them up in Jasper territory very late in the first half. With 11 seconds on the clock, BC knocked in a 42 yard field goal to make the score Jasper 28, Bridge City 6.

However, the Dawgs answered in a big way. On the ensuing kickoff, Jasper’s Carl Limbrick took the kickoff at the 20 and then bolted 80 yards for a touchdown as time ran out. Alex Mijares’ PAT was blocked, and Jasper went in at the half leading 34-6.

Jasper continued their scoring ways in the second half. After taking the Bridge City kickoff, Jasper’s first play from scrimmage was a completed pass from quarterback Trashawn Adams to Montavien Hunt and he then took it to the BC 1. From there, “Mr. Punch it In” Carl Limbrick did just that, he punched it in from 1 yard out. Mijares tacked on another PAT and Jasper pulled completely out of reach from BC, leading 41-6.

On Jasper’s next possession, Adams connected another pass, this time to Nolan Smith and he took it to the end zone. The PAT made it Jasper 48, Bridge City 6.

Bridge City finally found the end zone a little later in the 3rd quarter and their quarterback ran in a 2 point conversion. That put a little dent in Jasper’s lead, making it 48-14.

Late in the 3rd quarter, Jasper placekicker Alex Mijares nailed a 42 yard field goal to make it Jasper 51, Bridge City 14.

Earlier on Friday morning during the Coffee with Coach Show at First National Bank, Mijares was one of the student athlete guests on the show along with his coach, Darrell Barbay. Coach Barbay said that Mijares is one of the best place kickers in the state this year, and also the best kicker that Jasper has ever had.

The Dawgs found pay-dirt again in the 4th when Carl Limbrick took a handoff from quarterback and he jetted it in from 45 yards out. The Mijares PAT made it Jasper 58, BC 14.

Very late in the game, with Coach Barbay filtering in 2nd string players, he broke out a backup running back, Javien Hadnot, and he bolted one in from 31 out. The PAT was good and that did it for the scoring with Jasper winning 65-14.

The Dawgs are on the road again next Friday night traveling to Little Cypress-Mauriceville, kickoff at 7:30.
