The destroyed Vernon Parish Sheriff's Department patrol car following the pre-dawn crash on Wed, Sep 16th, 2020.

There was major damage, but miraculously only minor injuries after a Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department patrol car and another vehicle collided head-on early Wednesday morning. According to Detective Rhonda Jordan, it happened at about 5:00 on U.S. Highway 171 near Hawthorne Road, about 2 miles northwest of Leesville.

Jordan said the deputy was traveling northbound when a southbound vehicle crossed the center line, narrowly missed another vehicle, and then struck the patrol car. Jordan said the other vehicle flipped over and both vehicles began to catch on fire, but the flames were quickly handled by the Leesville Fire Department.

Despite major damage to both vehicles, the deputy and other driver were able to escape with only minor injuries and both underwent hospital treatment.

Louisiana State Police investigated the accident and there’s no word, yet, on possible charges against the driver at fault.
