The Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Department says that a woman’s body has been recovered from the Sabine River after she drowned late Wednesday afternoon. The department said in a press release that the incident occurred shortly after 4:00 near the Palmer Lake Boat Launch, which is near Merryville.

According to deputies, the search was suspended late that night and resumed early Thursday morning, and they were able to locate the body of 40-year-old Dolly Joyce Laughlin.

According to investigators, Laughlin was apparently swept away by the river current, resulting in her drowning.

Deputies noted that a male was also in the river and suffering from exhaustion after clinging to an ice chest to stay afloat. He was rescued by a police officer.

Meanwhile, an autopsy will be performed on Laughlin in Lake Charles.
