Newton County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Cynthia Hall said on Wednesday that the Grand Jury there has no-billed a man who was involved in a deadly December shooting of another man.

It happened on the evening of Wednesday, December 11th at a location on Farm to Market Road 2626, in the northeast portion of the county. Matthew Scott Mason, 40, was shot in the arm and he died a short time later at Jasper Memorial Hospital.

Early on, Sheriff Billy Rowles said it appeared to be a case of self-defense and said the shooter, Daniel Myers, told investigators that he shot Mason because he was "in fear of serious bodily injury". It was also noted that the two had been involved in an ongoing dispute.

The Grand Jury agreed and chose to not indict Myers on any charges.
