The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fiery head-on collision that killed a driver early Saturday morning in Newton County.
At approximately 2:45a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a head-on collision on SH 87 in Newton County, just north of the community of Bleakwood.
The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling northbound on SH 87. The driver of a 1996 Chevrolet passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on SH 87. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the center diving line and struck the passenger vehicle head-on. The Chevrolet passenger vehicle caught fire and was quickly engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Chevrolet passenger vehicle died at the crash. At this time, the victim has not been identified due to the extent of the fire.
The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck, a 24-year-old Bryceton Hughey of Kirbyville, was flown by medical helicopter to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation as DPS troopers work to positively identify the victim and determine the factors that contributed to the fatal crash.
