The Texas Department of Public Safety says a Houston man, who was driving a stolen vehicle and fleeing from police, was killed on Friday afternoon when he crashed into trees.
According to DPS Sergeant Stephanie Davis, at about 1:00 Woodville Police tried to stop a 2007 Dodge pickup truck after officers confirmed that it was a reported stolen vehicle out of Houston. However, Davis said a pursuit ensued, traveling eastbound on Highway 190 at a high rate of speed.
Davis said it ended near County Road 3550, about halfway between Woodville and Dam B, when the suspect went onto the shoulder of the highway trying to pass another vehicle and lost control. The pickup truck then went into a slide across both the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes before colliding with trees.
Davis also noted that the crash resulted in a small fire, which was quickly extinguished by officers.
The suspect, only described as a 25-year-old Houston resident, was pronounced dead at the scene by Tyler County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Ken Jobe. His name has not yet been released pending notification of next-of-kin.
