The Texas Department of Public Safety is reporting that a man from Vidor died on Sunday in an auto accident that occurred in nearby Orange County.

The report said Jonathon Sirmons, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Hershel Stagner, Jr. following the single vehicle accident on Farm to Market Road 1135 at the intersection of Interstate 10.

Sergeant Stephanie Davis of the DPS said officers investigating the incident determined that the crash occurred shortly after 4:00 a.m. when a Chevrolet Camaro driven by Sirmons which was headed north at a high rate of speed, left the roadway and hit a culvert, causing the vehicle to fly into the air and flip over end to end landing upside down in the middle of Interstate 10.

A passenger in the car, who was only identified as a 23-year-old female from Vidor was taken by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where she was at last word, still undergoing treatment for what was said to be serious injuries.

Unfortunately, officers said that Sirmons was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and that he was thrown from the car.
