Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the recovery of a stolen backhoe in the southern end of the county early Friday morning.

Sheriff Billy Rowles says the backhoe had been stolen from a construction site in Jefferson County, and a GPS tracking device on the equipment indicated that it was behind a house on County Road 3136 in the Gist Community.

Rowles and one of his deputies went to that location shortly after 8:00 and discovered that the backhoe was there.

According to Rowles, after speaking to people living in the area, it’s believed that the backhoe had been dropped off there sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

However, who stole the equipment is still not known and the case remains under investigation.
