Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said Tuesday that an investigation has revealed two individuals involved in a property deed scam and the sheriff’s wife, Jasper County Clerk Debbie Newman, says in all of her years as county clerk she has never seen anything like it.

Newman said that it’s a complicated case and more details will be released on Wednesday, but he briefly explained that the suspects were somehow getting local property deeds transferred over to their name and then selling the properties online for about half of what they were actually worth, and doing all of this without the knowledge of the actual owners.

Newman said the cases are in south Jasper County, and he believes that the pair may have also been doing this in Orange County as well.

As of Tuesday Newman said warrants were being drawn up and arrests are imminent. The names of the suspects will not be released until after arrest and arraignment.

KJAS News will followup on this story on Wednesday when the sheriff says more details will be released.
