Emergency crews were on the scene of a major accident on Highway 87 near Farm to Market Road 1414 north of Newton late Thursday afternoon.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Stephanie Davis said shortly before 5:00, a Dodge Caravan, driven by 42-year-old Richard Adams, of Newton, was traveling at an unsafe speed southbound on Highway 87. Davis said Adams lost control and the vehicle went off of the highway and struck several trees.

A medical helicopter landed at the nearby Newton Airport, and Adams was transported by ambulance from the scene to the airport to be placed in the helicopter. He was then flown to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment.

Sergeant Davis said Adams was not wearing a seatbelt and he sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash.
