A Tyler County law enforcement officer has been charged with official oppression, but the mayor of the community that he serves says that he has full support from city leaders.
Ivanhoe City Marshal Terry Riley was indicted on the charge by the Tyler County Grand Jury and he was arrested on Wednesday. Investigators allege that he used his position for personal gain - specifically, investigators allege that Riley illegally seized a home from a man in the Ivanhoe Community.
KFDM 6 News is quoting Ivanhoe Mayor Cathy Bennett as saying "I have been out of town since before the grand jury met, but the City of Ivanhoe stands behind Mr. Riley 100%”.
Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers have been called in to further investigate the matter.
Riley is currently free from the Tyler County Jail on a $500.00 bond for the class A misdemeanor charge. If convicted, he faces up to 1 year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.00.
