Prior to moving to Orange County and becoming a constable there, Matt Ortego served as a deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department.

A former Jasper County Sheriff's Deputy who now serves as a Constable in the nearby Orange County is being praised for his efforts in trying to save a man.

Ortego, who serves as constable of Precinct 4 and another officer were reportedly headed to Houston for training on Wednesday when they came up on a deadly crash that had just occurred on Interstate 10, west of Beaumont.

Ortego and the other officer immediately jumped out and went to work trying to save those involved. However, the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet Sport Utility Vehicle, Herman Tony, or Beaumont was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of a large eighteen wheeled tractor trailer truck, 45 year old Hector Lazano of Lawrenceville, Georgia was not injured.

Officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the Chevrolet was traveling west in the inside lane while the 2014 Mack truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling west in the outside lane. It is reported that the SUV changed lanes when unsafe and struck the truck tractor, at which point it then traveled into the ditch, struck a guardrail and overturned.

The roadway was blocked for some time as workers removed the wreckage from the highway.
