Beech Grove Fire Chief Jamie Gunter is reminding local residents to be extremely careful with any outdoor burning. Gunter says dead dry winter vegetation is fuel for fires, and that was exactly the case late Monday morning.

Beech Grove firefighters responded to a residence on Farm to Market Road 777 in the Curtis Community when it was reported that a controlled burn had reached dead grass and then began quickly spreading across a field.

Gunter said a woman who was burning trash pretty much did everything right. She had the trash pile contained inside a bricked off burn area. However, one spark got out and lit the grass on fire.

Firemen were able to quickly stop the flames before they threatened any structures.
