Longtime Jasper Sportscaster Art Lay died on Wednesday morning at Rayburn Health and Rehabilitation here in Jasper. Lay, who had a birthday on Saturday was 85.

After working for KFDM TV and KLVI Radio in Beaumont, Lay came to Jasper in 1974 and worked and with the exception of a few short stints, announced Bulldog games for over 40 years, first working at KTXJ and in later years Rayburn Broadcasting Co. and it's station KJAS.

His last game was in the fall of 2020.

A native of Groves and a veteran of the US Air Force, Lay was retired from the Deep East Texas Council of Governments.

Lay who was affectionately known as "The Voice of the Jasper Bulldog", was last heard on KJAS on September 4, 2020 when he was guest on the Coffee With the Coach program sponsored by the First National Bank with Johnny Mecom and Ron Vickers. 

Following that program, Mecom and Vickers along with JHS Athletic Director Darrell Barbay presented Lay with a plaque and thanked him for his service.

Funeral services are pending at Shultz Funeral Home here in Jasper.
