Equipment could be seen along the bridge on Memorial Day. However, workers had apparently taken the day off for the holiday.

Work is continuing as crews from Gibson and Associates of Balch Springs make the repairs engineers from the Texas Department of Transportation have said must be made before the bridge crossing the Neches River at Dam B can be opened again for traffic.

The bridge, which is located on Highway 190, between Jasper and Woodville was closed on Monday April 27th, when officials said an inspection had revealed damages to the structure, which made it unsafe.

Since the closure, Texas State Representative James White has pushed TXDOT to complete the job and open the bridge as soon as possible. However, when the roadway will re-open is not known.

White has said that even though engineering was rushed and a contract awarded for the repairs within a short time, completion will depend on materials, weather and other factors associated with construction.

However, TXDOT spokesperson Sarah Dupre has said it might be open as soon at June 1st.

Since the closure, traffic has been detoured by roadways to the north and south of Dam B, adding miles to what was a short, routine trip for those that traveled back and forth from points east and west of the waterway, such as Recreational Road 255 and Farm to Market Road 1013.

Cost of the job is said to be $199,500.00.
