A World War II U.S. Navy veteran celebrated her 101st birthday on Tuesday. Johnnie Odom, who was stationed at San Diego, California during the war, now resides at Shady Acres Health & Rehabilitation in Newton.
A birthday party and cake for Mrs. Odom was organized by local U.S. Marine Corps veteran Jose Narvaez, who organizes birthday parties for older military vets across the region.
Fortunately, Mrs. Odom’s family members were in attendance, but Narvaez says in many cases there are no family members for the old veterans, and that’s why it’s important for them to know that they’re loved and appreciated for their service to their country.
Narvaez said that Johnnie Odom’s birthday party was the sixty-third that he has given for a military vet over 100 years of age.
