A man was killed in north Newton County while working to remove tree limbs and other debris left by Hurricane Laura.
Newton County Sheriff Billy Rowles said the accident occurred shortly before 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon, on Farm to Market Road 1414, southeast of Burkeville, when the boom of a truck that was being used to lift debris came into contact with a power line.
Rowles said first responders with the Burkeville Fire Department were the first to arrive at the scene and immediately began to perform CPR on the individual. However, they were unsuccessful in saving the worker.
The man, who was said to be working for an out of state contractor, was pronounced dead at the scene by Newton County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Greer.
The name of the deceased has not been released pending formal notification of next of kin.
