A children's playground is just one of the many amenities at Mill Creek Park at Lake Sam Rayburn in Sabine County.

Word is that the U.S. Army had decided to keep nearby Mill Creek Park and two other facilities on nearby Lake Sam Rayburn open in the upcoming winter months.

The Executive Director of the Jasper Lake Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce, Beverly Holley, said Tuesday that not only would the Corps of Engineers keep Mill Creek open, but also Hanks Creek and San Augustine Parks as well.

The change in plans might be due to a large amount of interest that developed weeks ago, when the Corps of Engineers announced that it would be closing the parks, all located on the north end of the lake, during the winter months as part of cost cutting measure.

Shortly after the closures were announced, the chamber organized a petition, which has been signed by 616 people who opposed the closure.

Members of the chamber and others have also contacted U.S. Representative Brian Babin and Texas State Representative James White, who became involved in the effort to avoid the closure.
