There was definitely smoke, but thankfully there was no fire at First Baptist Church in Jasper on Wednesday afternoon. The Jasper Fire Department responded to the building on North Main Street at about 3:00 on a report of a fire alarm, and also people in the building were reporting that they smelled smoke.

When Jasper firefighters arrived, as well as KJAS News, there was a very pronounced smell of smoke inside the building. Church workers said the smell appeared when the power came back on after it had been disrupted by an earlier accident at the corner of Highway 96 at Houston Street.

Firefighters used a heat sensing camera to look carefully at the air conditioning system, but they said they found nothing unusual. Meanwhile, church officials were looking closely at the electrical components of the church’s sound system as a possible culprit.

First Baptist Church was destroyed by fire in June of 2003, and the current building - which features both a fire alarm and sprinkler systems - was completed and opened in 2006.
