A 14-year-old girl died early Sunday evening as the result of an explosion at an oil or natural gas well site in Beauregard Parish.

Zalee Day, of Ragley, was killed when the explosion occurred at about 5:00 p.m. near the intersection of Cordial Lane and South Cooley Road, about 20 miles south of DeRidder.

It’s not known where the girl was when the explosion occurred, but maps show that the site is surrounded by nearby houses - the closest one only 150 feet away.

KPLC News in Lake Charles is reporting that the site was inactive, and the investigation into how or why the explosion occurred is underway.
