Newton Police Chief Will Jackson confirmed on Monday that his department was investigating a shooting that occurred there over the weekend.

A family member said Monday that police were called to a residence on Highway 87, just north of Newton, shortly after 2:00 on Sunday morning, when it was reported that two men had entered a home and were confronted by the homeowner.

A struggle is said to have occurred and before it was over the homeowner was reportedly shot at close range. The unidentified  man was taken to hospital, where he was at last word still undergoing treatment.

Jackson said that he could comment on the incident, pending further investigation.
