Justin Smith, who is a lineman for the Jasper Newton Electric Cooperative, woke up on the morning of Thursday August 27th facing two very real situations; his home in Beech Grove was severely damaged by trees, while almost no one in Jasper or Newton County had electricity.
After working to clear fallen trees from his home, Smith went to work at the cooperative attempting to clear limbs, lines, fallen poles, and more in an effort to restore power to the members of the cooperative.
When a tree fell, Justin was hurt and at that point he was faced with not only a destroyed home, but also an injured foot.
Hearing of Justin’s plight, the Chief of the Beech Grove Fire Department, Jamie Gunter, along with Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy John Cooper organized a fish fry fund raiser to help with expenses and on Saturday before the day was over, $20,000.00 had been raised.
Gunter said Monday that he was pleased with the turnout and he thanked all of those that helped both financially and by cooking.
Sponsors of the event, which was held at the Beech Grove Fire Station on Farm to Market Road 777, included: Aimco Roofing and Construction, Bill L. Dover Company, C3 Oil Company, CP Addict, Walker Equipment Repair, McAdams Propane, State Farm Insurance Agent Brent Meaux, LRG, Inc., Elijah’s Café, Morton Air Conditioning, MVP's Restaurant and KJAS Radio.
