Dr. David Fain

Friends, family, and colleagues of local veterinarian Dr. David Fain gathered on Monday evening to celebrate his retirement following over 38 years of caring for animals.

The event was held at Lakes Area Veterinary Hospital on Highway 190 West in Jasper where Fain, along with Dr. Royce Smathers, Dr. Dusty Taff, and Dr. Lori Fain Coleman practice veterinary medicine.

Fain graduated with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University in 1980 and returned home to Jasper where he began Fain Veterinary Hospital in January of 1982.

He later partnered with his old classmate, Dr. Royce Smathers, who also graduated from Texas A&M Veterinary School in 1980. In July of 1989 they formed Fain & Smathers Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Dusty Taff - the only non-Aggie – joined the clinic’s staff as an associate doctor in November of 2010. A 2004 graduate of Oklahoma State University, Taff then practiced veterinary medicine in Alabama for 6 years before relocating to Jasper. Taff became a partner in the practice in August of 2013, and the name was changed to Lakes Area Veterinary Hospital.

Another Aggie joined the family in 2016. In fact, she is FAMILY. Dr. Lori Fain Coleman is Dr. Fain’s daughter and she graduated from Texas A&M Veterinary School in 2016.
