Jasper County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Brett Holloway, who is also a member of Rayburn First Responders, holds the snake shortly after it was located inside and removed from the home. The chicken snake, also known as a Texas rat snake, had somehow gotten into the house and had bitten a young child right above the eye. The photo was taken by Jasper County Sheriff's Department Deputy Jacob Horn.

A child was bitten on the head by a snake that had gotten into a house in far north Jasper County late Wednesday afternoon. It happened at a residence in the 100 block of Brenda Drive North, in the Lakeland Addition near Brookeland.

Rayburn First Responders located the snake inside the house and identified it as a non-venomous chicken snake, also known as a Texas rat snake.

The child was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment of the snake bite, which was said to be just above the eye.
