A man is dead following a police chase that occurred in South Jasper County in the early hours of Monday morning and officers investigating the incident believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said the series of events began shortly before midnight on Sunday evening when officer Taylhr Miller was responding to a reported disturbance in Cougar Country, just off of Highway 96, north of Buna.

Newman said that as Miller was arriving at the scene, he saw a motorcycle with no license plate leaving the scene. Newman said that when the officer attempted to stop the motorcycle, the driver refused to stop.

According to Newman, the chase, which reached speeds of over 100 miles-per-hour, continued south on Highway 96 to Buna and then north on Farm to Market Road 1004 where the driver apparently lost control of the bike, laying it down in a driveway.

Newman said that as Miller approached the driver, he saw a flash and heard a gunshot.

The driver of the motorcycle, who was later identified as William Lyons, 41, of Buna, was transported to a hospital in Beaumont where he later died from his injuries.

Newman said the incident was still under investigation.
