A worker has died in an industrial accident at the German Pellets facility in Jefferson County. According to the Port Arthur Fire Department, it happened shortly before 8:00 Friday morning at the facility located at the Port of Port Arthur.
According to firefighters, the unidentified worker was using a bobcat machine to remove wood pellets from a silo when the pellets fell on top of the machine.
Despite the efforts of rescuers to free him, he died at the scene.
Meanwhile, officials with German Pellets aren’t saying anything at all. A spokesperson for the company said on Friday that they have no comment.
German Pellets is a worldwide company, and based in Germany. They have three locations in the United States; Woodville, Texas, Port Arthur, Texas, and Urania, Louisiana.
The locations in Woodville and Port Arthur have been plagued with problems over the years, including fires and even a few explosions. However, this is the first known death at a German Pellets facility in the U.S.
After a fire in a silo smoldered for several weeks and created smoke in Port Arthur earlier this year, a judge later signed an agreed order and issued a temporary injunction requiring German Pellets to make improvements and safeguard the public.
