Former Jasper City Councilman David Shultz was sworn in on Thursday by Municipal Judge Robert Jackson to serve an unexpired term on the council. This came after Shultz was appointed on Monday to fill the District 4 seat that had been previously occupied by Raymond Hopson, who was recently elected to serve as Jasper County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace.
Hopson had served in the position for many years, but was forced to resign due to state laws that do not allow a person to serve in both positions at the same time.
The motion to appoint Shultz to the position was made by City Council Member Tommy Schofield and was seconded by Laura Golden. The measure passed unanimously with all voting in favor except for newly elected City Council member DeMarcus Holmes, who was not present.
Shultz owns and operates Shultz Funeral Home & Crematory on South Wheeler Street. He served on the Jasper City Council from 2001 to 2004, and he has also been a firefighter and at one time served as Chief of the Jasper Fire Department.
