Newton County Sheriff Billy Rowles says a Wednesday evening shooting death is under investigation. According to Rowles it happened at about 8:00 at a location on Farm to Market Road 2626, in the northeast portion of the county.

Rowles says that the male victim was shot in the arm and he was rushed to Jasper Memorial Hospital where he died a short time later.

According to Rowles, the alleged shooter told investigators that he did so because he was "in fear of serious bodily injury".

Rowles said no charges have been filed, and the incident would remain under investigation.

Meanwhile, an autopsy was performed on the victim on Thursday in the Golden Triangle.

KJAS Radio News has learned through reliable sources that the victim Matthew Scott Mason, 40, was transported to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by Jasper County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Ronnie Billingsly shortly after 10:00.

KJAS has also learned that the alleged shooter in the incident was Daniel Myers, also of Newton, who was reportedly questioned by officers. Word is that the incident might have been the result of an ongoing dispute between the two men.

Meanwhile, the sheriff's department has revealed that Mason was on Myers' property when he was shot.
