New orders issued by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Friday regarding the spread of Coronavirus have had an effect on the 2020 KJAS Jasper Independence Day in the Park, which this year will be on Saturday, July 4th. Following the issuance of the new orders, and also consultation with Jasper Mayor Gary Gatlin and Jasper Fire Chief Jimmie Primrose, big changes have been to this year’s event.

The yearly event would normally feature many activities in Sandy Creek Park on Marvin Hancock Drive, including LIVE music, numerous food options, and of course fireworks.

However, the event’s organizer, Debbie Foster of KJAS, announced late Friday afternoon that only the fireworks show will be held this year, and just to do that will require a lot of cooperation from those who want to see the fireworks.

Foster said that attendees will have to remain in their vehicles, and they can park inside the park, or in the other nearby parking lots, or along the sides of Marvin Hancock Drive, or anywhere else where they can get a line of sight to see the fireworks show.

Meanwhile, City of Jasper officials said, unfortunately, no one can park on the new parking lots at the nearly complete addition to the park. City officials say the recently paved parking lots require a period of 28 days to cure before vehicles can be allowed on them.

Foster noted that Marvin Hancock Drive will close at 9:00 p.m., so if you plan of parking anywhere on or along Marvin Hancock, you need to be in place and parked before 9:00.

The fireworks show will begin at 9:30, and the synchronized music that would normally play inside the park will instead be broadcast LIVE on KJAS 107.3 FM, so you can hear the music inside your vehicle.

Marvin Hancock Drive will reopen at 10:00 p.m., or at the conclusion of the fireworks show.
