A woman is undergoing hospital treatment after she was involved in a single-vehicle accident early Monday afternoon. Emergency crews responded to the scene at about 2:00 on U.S. Highway 96 North between Recreational Road 255 and Farm to Market Road 1007.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Stephanie Davis said investigating troopers at the scene determined that a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was southbound when it crossed the northbound lane and then collided head-on with trees on the east side of the roadway.
Davis said the vehicle was driven by 65-year-old Diana Smoke, of Brookeland, and her son, Lucas Smoke, 39, also of Brookeland, was the passenger.
Davis said the son told troopers that he believed his mother experienced a sudden medical problem.
Lake Rayburn Firefighters & First Responders worked together to assist Diana Smoke. As firefighters used saws to cut trees away, medical first responders tended to Smoke while she was still inside the vehicle.
Diana Smoke was later flown by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment. Davis said Lucus Smoke was not injured.
