A standoff between and man with a gun and Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman and his deputies has ended with no shots being fired and no one being hurt or injured.

Newman said the series of events began shortly after 8:00 on Tuesday morning, when it was reported that a man had assaulted his wife at a home on County Road 406, west of Kirbyville.

Newman said officers arrived and talked to the man, who was reportedly wielding a gun and refusing to come out for well over two hours, before he finally laid the weapon down and surrendered without incident.

Newman said the woman, who was thought to have only minor injuries, was taken to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital where she was treated.

The alleged perpetrator was taken to the Jasper County Jail. However, his name has not been released, pending formal charges and arraignment.

Newman said, “The main thing is that nobody got hurt.” Newman went on to say that he was proud of his assault team and how they handled the situation. He said Tuesday's incident was true situation where officers put their lives on the line to handle a situation where a man who had a gun required action.
