The Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed that a motorcyclist involved in a Thursday night pursuit and crash is a former state trooper.
He has been identified as 53-year-old Gregory Evans, of Orange, and archived media reports indicate that he had reached the rank of Sergeant and had been stationed in Tyler County.
There were actually two different motorcycle pursuits in the north end of Jasper County that occurred only minutes apart, and the second one involved Evans.
According to Sergeant Shana Clark, the first chase began shortly before 9:00 when a trooper tried to stop a motorcycle on Highway 96. It ended when the motorcyclist managed to elude capture in Rayburn Country.
As the trooper and Jasper County deputies were searching for that motorcycle, another motorcyclist fled from them. The second pursuit ended on Highway 96 near Recreational Road 255 when the motorcyclist crashed.
Sergeant Clark said the rear tire of the 2020 Kawasaki had a blowout, which resulted in the crash.
At last word, Evans was undergoing treatment at Jasper Memorial Hospital.
