Beech Grove Fire Chief Jamie Gunter says that his department is working closely with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department to identify an arsonist who intentionally set two fires in a wooded area near Dam B late Thursday morning. Firefighters were called out shortly after 11:00 when a small blaze was reported alongside County Road 156, and a short time later firemen were working a much larger fire along County Road 155, both near the entrance to Sandy Creek Park.
Gunter said the first fire never really got going and may have either burned itself out or was stomped out by a passerby. However, Gunter said they were fortunate that they discovered the second fire when they did because it was quickly growing into an area where it would have taken off and grown much larger.
The fire chief noted that at the second fire it appeared that a cardboard box had been used to set the blaze.
Jasper County deputies questioned a man that was walking along Highway 190 near the Dam B Bridge, but Gunter said it was determined that he was not involved.
Meanwhile, Gunter requested for anyone who noticed a suspicious person or any suspicious activity in that area Thursday morning to call the sheriff’s department at 409-384-5417. You do not have to give your name.
