Friday was just the fourth day of early voting in the 2020 General Election, and Jasper County Clerk Debbie Newman’s Office says that 5,795 people have voted.

That’s 24% of the county’s 23,403 registered voters that have already cast ballots, and there’s still two weeks of early voting to go before the Tuesday, November 3rd Election Day.

The record for an election in Jasper County was the 2016 General Election in which a total of 8,046 votes were cast in Jasper County. It appears that Jasper County voters will easily surpass that number this year.

It’s shaping up to be a record shattering year across the country as well. It’s being reported that voters are flocking to the polls nationwide.

The big draw, of course, is the Presidential Election. Incumbent President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are seeking re-election, and they’re being challenged by former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, California Senator Kamala Harris.

Meanwhile, many are also having their say in several other races that are drawing a lot of interest.

Incumbent Republican Congressman Brian Babin is facing a challenge from Democrat Rashad Lewis, while even further down the ballot voters are considering several races on the county and municipal level.

On the county level, there are Justice of the Peace races with Republican John Cooper, Democrat Ray Lewis, and Independent Marsha Stephenson running for the Precinct 1 position and Republican Raymond Hopson and Democrat Marcus Barber running for the Precinct 2 position.

In the City of Jasper, Incumbent District 3 Councilwoman Hazel Johnson is facing a challenge from DeMarcus Holmes for her seat.

Also of interest is the Jasper Hospital Board of Directors with two incumbents facing eight challengers, and the Jasper Independent School District Board of Trustees with two incumbents facing two challengers.
