Local law enforcement officers and military veterans came together on Saturday for a Gumbo Cookoff on the parking lot of the Lowe's store in Jasper. Although the gumbo competition was all in fun, the information and services provided to military veterans was very important.

The event was organized by Jasper Police Officer Barbara Bienvenu and local military veteran Jim Garris.

Representatives were on hand from The Vet Center, the Veteran's Administration, and Census 2020. It was learned during the event that changes have been made in medical care of veterans, and now local medical facilities can become satellite offices of VA Hospitals, meaning that medical care provided to a veteran at that facility will be reimbursed by the Veteran's Administration.

So far there are no participating facilities in the Jasper area, but officials that were on hand Saturday said that they hope to soon recruit medical facilities here to participate in the program.

As for the gumbo competition, Officer Barbara Bienvenu won with her chicken and sausage gumbo.
